Toolbox session 4

For toolbox 4 we had to do a variety of designs in which we had to collage and come up with ideas of outfits, with our museum research. As an AA student, I didn’t have the chance to go and explore the museum so I had to do it online. With this, I chose the Science Museum of London with the collection of “Telecommunication” in which you can see the different telephones that there have existed. I choose this theme because it caught my attention, and specifically how we have changed over time, and how now communication is based over social media. I choose 5 telephones and made a sketch out of them, and printed the images. While doing the sketches I really took my time to do them, because I felt like its my first opportunity to show part of my artistic side, and my abilities. Eventhough I did felt like it was challenging, as I havent draw in like months, I like that I had practice and I gave myself time to do it.

With the images printed, I decided on 8 different looks that were not figured base, but instead a little bit more abstract. This was the hardest part for me, as I tend to design based on the model’s body, so I had to constantly remind myself not to do that, and also not play it safe. Once again I took my time with this sketches, cutting and pasting and moving different things aroun to have a perspective of all sides. Sometimes I liked what I did and sometimes I didnt, but I think that putting myself out there and actually experimenting was a big step for myself.

This was definitly an interesting activity, I had a lot of fun trying out new things, and sketching around. I have never had the task of creating outfits out of common things like a telephone, but it brought my creativity to another level. I would have loved to do this activity in class and have the professor’s feedback, but it also allowed me to explore my ideas and really put my mind into thinking.

After finishing the creation of the outfits, I had to doodle on each outfit further explaining what I had thought about this outfit. For this, I found myself in a difficult position, as my personal interest is in Hair and Make-up so the drawing skills don’t come as easy for me, as I don’t have quite the ability, but once again it was a challenge that I wanted to overstep and I did. I tried to say with a positive mindset and I finished all my work, but it did took me 3 hours to complete, so I take as a learning to not take work for granted.
